Turner’s passion for basketball ignited at a young age, sparking a love for the game that would drive him through his formative years. Progressing from junior high to varsity under the mentorship of Coach Keith Williams,
Turner’s talent blossomed. As a freshman, he quickly rose to prominence on the ninth-grade team before earning a spot on the varsity
roster.

During his sophomore year in 2021-2022, Turner solidified his place as a starter, showcasing his skills and leading Warren Central to several significant victories, including a remarkable 25-point performance
against Pearl. His season average of 17
points per game highlighted his growing impact on the team.

“I had older players encouraging me to do good so that helped me out a lot as a young player on the varsity team,” Turner said.

In the following year, Turner continued to excel, maintaining his stellar average of 17 points per game. His pivotal role in securing wins against tough opponents such as Callaway, Jim Hill, and Lanier underscored his
developing prowess on the court.

“I kept getting better as time went on but it took a lot of work and I finally got there,”he added.

Despite his impressive performances and contributions to Warren Central’s success, Turner’s talent often flew under the radar, overshadowed by others in the county and district. His numbers would continue to improve as he final year approached where he quickly showed his true skills.

During his senior year, Turner silenced doubters by elevating his game even further, averaging over 24 points per game, surpassing 1,000 career points, and earning the prestigious VDN Basketball Player of the Year Award. Leading his team to their best season
in four years, Turner left an indelible mark on Warren Central.

“No one really knew me so putting up those numbers really made me proud and Coach Williams influenced me a lot by teaching me how to become a better man and teammate,” Gaylon said.

Despite the lack of widespread recognition, Turner’s skills caught the attention of East Central Community College, where he ultimately accepted an offer to continue his basketball career.

Acknowledging the importance of hard work in achieving his goals, Turner remained grateful to his supporters who stood by him throughout his journey.

“I want thank my parents, family and coaches for everything they’ve done for me.”

Before signing day was complete, Coach Williams left some encouraging words to his athlete.

“Be the best of you,” Williams said. “You attitude is 90% of what you are and what you become, but your character is what 100% defines you.”
