MCCOMB, Miss. (VDN) — A McComb police officer, Sgt. Jason Blake, was shot and killed Tuesday evening while off duty, according to city officials.

McComb Police Chief Earnest Perry said Blake was responding to help someone who had called him while he was off duty when he was fatally shot.

Blake had served with the McComb Police Department for five years and had 16 years of total law enforcement experience, including time with the Pike County Sheriff’s Office.

“This is some of the stuff we sign up for,” Perry said. “He died doing what he loved.”

McComb Mayor Quordiniah N. Lockley said the incident occurred near Highway 44 and Cole Thomas Road. Two other individuals were also shot, one of them fatally.

Blake, described by Perry as a “big teddy bear,” was married and had children.

“He was well-loved in the community. It is just a sad day, and until we figure out the circumstances, just keep us in your prayers,” Perry said.

The Pike County Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation. The names of the other individuals involved have not been released.
