A Vicksburg woman was killed in an apparent domestic violence shooting Wednesday night on Hope Street near Clay Street and Kar Kleen Washes & Engine.

According to information, Clarinda Turpin, 47, was struck multiple times during the incident. Eyewitnesses reported hearing that she may have been shot as many as seven times.

Emergency responders, including the Vicksburg Police Department, Vicksburg Fire Department and Fire Medic 80, arrived at the scene. AirCare was initially requested, but officials said the helicopter was in Meridian and approximately 70 minutes away when the call was received. The victim was transported by ambulance to a hospital, where she later died from her injuries.

Shortly after the shooting, the suspect fled into Warren County. Authorities said the suspect allegedly ingested an unknown substance in an apparent suicide attempt and was involved in a vehicle crash. He was transported to a hospital, where he remains restrained and in police custody.

“This is one of those unfortunate things that happens,” Vicksburg Police Chief Larry Burns said. “Vicksburg is a beautiful place to raise a family, but unfortunately a large percentage of crime is domestic violence.”
