VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) — Vicksburg police officer Steven Ragan is earning praise for his everyday acts of kindness, including helping stranded drivers — all while keeping a trunk full of tools to assist.

In a recent social media post, Michelle Myricks thanked Officer Steven Ragan after spotting him helping a woman air up a tire on a busy street.

“I was taking my grands to Warrenton Elementary School and spotted him kneeling down helping to fix a tire,” Myricks wrote. “The road was dangerous, but he was determined to help. Later I found out that this is his normal behavior. He carries water for cars overheating, cables to give a boost off, an air pump etc. He said, ‘Thank you,’ when I approached him to express my gratitude, he also said ‘I just am serving the community.’“

Vicksburg Police Chief Penny Jones said Ragan has worn many hats in the department since joining in 2015.

“As one of our designated police bicyclists, he has consistently demonstrated agility and vigilance, patrolling our neighborhoods with visibility and approachability — which naturally draws citizens, especially youth, toward him,” Jones said. “The impact he has made on young people in this city cannot be overstated. Many youth look up to him not because he wears a badge, but because of the way he wears his heart on his sleeve and leads by example.”

Jones also noted Ragan’s leadership as a field training officer.

“In this role, he has exemplified leadership, patience and professionalism,” she said. “He brings out the best in our new recruits by setting a high standard of conduct while guiding them with a calm and respectful demeanor. His ability to teach, correct and inspire is unmatched.”
