For the first time in 20 years, the Warren Central High School baseball team will head to North State after defeating Saltillo 1-0 in game three.

“The guys responded well and they knew what we had at stake,” WC Head Coach Randy Broome said. I’m as proud as I can be of all of them and Maddox pitched his butt off tonight and we learned from our mistakes.”

The game remained scoreless until the third inning when senior Cole Autrey knocked one over the fence to bring in the only run of the night as the Vikings went up 1-0.

“Bats didn’t really get going but we hit a lot of balls hard and we plan to stay hot,” Autrey said.

The key to Monday’s big win was pitching where Maddox Lynch dominated on the mound. He struck out eight batters and allowed only three hits and zero runs. As the final inning approached, Maddox quickly struck out the last two players at-bat to send WC to the third round for the first time in two decades.

“It feels really good but I know I couldn’t have done it without my team so it wasn’t a one-man show it was all nine,” he said. We wanted to put on for everyone who comes out and supports us.”

Cade Fairley and Conner Watkins both had a hit in the win as WC improved to 17-11 on the season.

The Vikings will move on to face Center Hill at North State. Game times will be announced shortly.
