VPD arrests one of their own
VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) — A Vicksburg Police officer was arrested by fellow officers after causing a disturbance at the Police Department.
On Saturday evening, after 11 p.m., while units were dealing with a shooting on Hayes Street that left three people injured, other units arrived at the police station to find Christopher Pope, 25, a VPD officer who was off duty, involved in a disturbance with an unnamed female. Chief Burns said it was unclear how Pope and the female knew each other and that it was still under investigation. He was unable to clarify if this was a domestic disturbance.
The two officers, Captain Judge and Lt. Carson, attempted to get Pope to calm down, and “Bottom line is, they tried to get him to calm down, he wouldn’t, and they, subsequently, arrested him,” said Chief Burns. “Christopher Pope is no longer with the police department. We’re still going to go through the process and conduct our investigations.”
“It’s an unfortunate situation, but you know, you have to take action. None of us is above the law. None of us. We take this job seriously. I take my position seriously,” said Burns. “And we want to continue to try to convey to the community that just because you wear a gun and a badge doesn’t mean that you can act in a way any different from the citizens that we’re trying to protect. If they violate the law in some way, you expect law enforcement to take action, right? So why should law enforcement itself be any different?”
