Active shooter, hostage situation in Simpson County

There is an active shooter situation in Simpson County involving four hostages. A two-month-old is in the cross fires.

As of about 2:15 p.m. today, Wednesday, June 3, Simpson County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a welfare concern on W.L. Blair Circle in Mendenhall. The event has developed into an active shooter situation when deputies arrived, the front door was open and someone inside began shooting according to reports.

The deputy is still on scene without major injuries according to sources.

There are believed to be two elderly people, a two-month-old child and an additional person being held by the gunman.

The suspected gunman has barricaded the window with a mattress.

Pearl, Rankin, and Hinds SWAT teams are in route to the location.

Updates will be made available.

Update as of 3:40 p.m.- Reports are coming in that the gunman has shot down two law enforcement drones.

Update as of 3:55- Reports are saying the mother of the gunman is speaking to him urging him to come out and surrender unarmed.
