Dellie C. Robinson honored with Roy Garcia Outstanding Coach Award
VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) —
Dellie C. Robinson, the legendary former Vicksburg High School basketball coach, added another milestone to his storied career Friday after receiving the prestigious Roy Garcia Outstanding Coach Award at the Mississippi Association of Coaches Clinic.
The award is presented annually to a coach who exemplifies the highest standards in high school athletics, honoring those who have made a lasting impact on the lives of student-athletes both on and off the court, regardless of wins and losses. Established by the Mississippi Association of Coaches in 2008, the award recognizes individuals who reflect the character, leadership and commitment demonstrated by the late Roy Garcia.
For Robinson, the honor serves as another testament to a coaching career that shaped generations of athletes while establishing one of Mississippi’s premier basketball programs.
Robinson spent more than 30 years as a head basketball coach, including 25 seasons leading the Vicksburg High School Gators from 1992 until his retirement in 2017. During that span, he transformed the program into one of the school’s most successful athletic teams.
His crowning achievement came in 2003 when he guided the Gators to the MHSAA state championship with a 61-54 victory over Starkville High School. Robinson also led Vicksburg High to state championship appearances in 2011 and 2014, further cementing the program’s place among the state’s elite.
Success became a hallmark of Robinson’s tenure. Under his leadership, the Gators captured district championships in 1995, 1996, 2000, 2003, 2005, 2011 and 2013. His teams finished as South State runners-up in 1995 before winning the South State Championship in 1996.
Robinson’s excellence on the sidelines earned him numerous accolades throughout his career. He was selected as the Vicksburg Post Coach of the Year 10 times and received the Channel One Coach of the Year Award in 1997. By the time he retired, Robinson had accumulated nearly 800 career victories, placing him among the winningest basketball coaches in Mississippi history.
His influence extended far beyond the scoreboard. Robinson became known for mentoring young men, teaching discipline, accountability and perseverance while helping countless players prepare for life after basketball.
Earlier this year, Vicksburg High School permanently recognized Robinson’s legacy by naming its basketball court in his honor, ensuring future generations of Gators will compete on a floor bearing the name of one of the school’s greatest coaches.
