Hall named Bulldog of the Week

PERKINSTON — Laylah Johnson and Trey Hall have been named Bulldogs of the Week for Sept. 16-22.

Johnson, a freshman defender/left winger from Gulfport, was dominant for Mississippi Gulf Coast in the opening week of MACCC play. She had a goal and two assists in a 5-0 win over East Central, then exploded for four goals in a 6-2 victory over Southwest Mississippi.

Hall, a sophomore running back from Vicksburg, exploded for 163 yards on just 11 carries in Mississippi Gulf Coast’s 55-36 win at Southwest. He scored one touchdown on a scintillating 93-yard scamper, the fourth-longest in school history.

Also nominated:

Stanley Campbell, a sophomore from London, England, shot 3-over at the Folds of Honor Challenge in Michigan, helping lead No. 1 Gulf Coast to a third-place finish. The Bulldogs lost only to a pair of NCAA teams ranked in the top-20 of their respective divisions.

Laurel Conley, a freshman from Ocean Springs, recorded a fifth straight shutout to open the season on the way to a 2-0 week for Mississippi Gulf Coast. She stopped one shot in a 5-0 win over East Central, then had a four-save performance in a 6-2 win over Southwest Mississippi.

Brandon Hines, a sophomore from New Orleans, La., returned a kick 90 yards for a touchdown in Mississippi Gulf Coast’s 55-36 win at Southwest Mississippi. He averaged 50.3 yards on three returns.

Victor Moerck, a sophomore from Vaerlose, Denmark, scored goals in both games last week for Mississippi Gulf Coast. He had a goal and an assist in a 4-1 win over East Central, then did the same in a 4-0 win over Southwest Mississippi.

David Ruiz Ospina, a sophomore from Manizales, Colombia, got a in a 2-0 week for Mississippi Gulf Coast in the opening week of MACCC play. He stopped one shot in the win over East Central, then had five saves to record a shutout against Southwest.

Marcus Washington, a sophomore safety from D’Iberville, had a slew of big plays for Gulf Coast at Southwest. He scored the game’s first points with a 24-yard scoop-and-score fumble return. Washington recovered another fumble later in the half, then ended the half with an interception he returned 57 yards. He also had three tackles.
