Hinds knocked off Southwest
SUMMIT, Miss. – The Hinds Community College baseball team cruises to a doubleheader sweep over Southwest Mississippi CC on Tuesday. The Eagles took down the Bears in game one by a final score of 10-5 and carried their momentum over to take the nightcap 4-2.
In the first game of the doubleheader, the Bears scored the first run of the contest in the bottom of the second inning. After a scoreless third and fourth inning, the Eagles’ offense plated three runs in the top of the of the fifth inning, but the hosts responded with a couple of runs in the bottom half of the frame to level the score at 3 after five innings of play.
Hinds continued to stay hot and produced two runs in the sixth and three runs in the seventh to take an 8-3 lead going into the final two innings of the game. The Eagles scored an insurance run in the top of the eighth and a run in the top of the ninth to bring the score to 10-3 with three outs to go. In the bottom of the ninth, Southwest scored two runs, but the Eagles remained in the lead and took the game one victory 10-5.
Thomas Marsala led the Eagles with three RBI and went 2-for-4 from the plate. Braden Richardson, Kette Stavely, and Graham Busbea all had multiple hits in the game. Tyler Janos and Busbea both record an extra base hit, while Marsala and Cameron Hill each had a Homerun. Ryan Herbisongot the start and the win on the mound for the Eagles after going eight innings and only gave up two earned runs. Additionally, he struck out five batters and gave up a walk.
In the seven-inning game of the doubleheader, the Eagles scored three runs in the top of the second inning, but the Bears plated two runs in the bottom half of the inning to make the score 3-2 after two complete innings. It was a pitcher’s duel for the next four innings until Cameron Hill broke the seal with an RBI-triple to right center to give the Eagles the 4-2 lead. In the bottom of the seventh the Bears had a chance to add additional runs, but the Eagles’ defense slammed the door to grab the 4-2 win as the Eagles swept Southwest.
Tyler Janos led the Eagles going 3-for-3 from the plate and scored a run in the contest. Ashton Johnson, Cameron Hill, Brice Ainsworth, and Elijah Thompson all tallied a hit in the game. On the mound, Lincoln Sheffield was dominant once again after he went the complete game, gave up one earned run, and posted five strikeouts to grab his sixth victory of the year on the bump.
The Eagles will be back in action on Saturday, April 13th against Mississippi Delta Community College in Moorhead, MS. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 1 PM.
