VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN)—Vicksburg native Layla Carter has officially made her next move in her collegiate basketball career. Carter will be playing at Clark Atlanta University next season as she will soon be signing her official scholarship.
Carter will be joining CAU’s program after spending last season at Mississippi Delta Community College. She helped the Lady Trojans to a 21-7 record. They also went 8-6 in conference play while reaching the NJCAA 23 Tournament.
At Mississippi Delta, Carter averaged 11.7 points per game, 6.6 rebounds and 2.4 assists. She starred under Head Coach Tangela Banks.
Before joining Mississippi Delta CC, Carter spent her freshman year at Southern Arkansas University. In her lone year at SAU, Carter played in 20 games where she had a season-high of 14 points against Arkansas Monticello. She also had a great performance against Arlington Baptist as she scored 11 points and grabbed five rebounds.
Before playing basketball on the collegiate level, Carter spent several years starting for Vicksburg High School. She led her freshman team to an undefeated season and by her junior and senior season, she was named to the Dandy Dozen list. Carter played under Head Coach Troy Stewart at VHS where she chose to attend SAU over schools like the University of Southern Mississippi and the University of Louisiana Monroe.
After averaging 20 points per game as a senior, Carter was selected as VDN’s Basketball Player of the Year. She was also named Miss Basketball in class 5A.
Layla will soon be playing under CAU Head Coach Tony Bailey who recently led the team to a 24-8 season.
