VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) — A 27-year-old man was injured by a stray bullet while driving early Saturday morning following reports of gunfire in the area of Fifth North and Jackson streets, according to authorities.

“At 12:54 a.m., officers responded to multiple reports of shots fired in the area of Fifth North and Jackson Street,” said Vicksburg Police Chief Penny Jones. “A 27-year-old Black male later arrived at Merit Health River Region with a gunshot wound to the back. He was airlifted to the University of Mississippi Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.”

Concerned citizens told the Vicksburg Daily News they heard more than 20 gunshots in the area, with one person reporting hearing “closer to 30” between Jackson and Main streets near Fifth North.

“Officers canvassed the area but initially found no shell casings,” Jones said. “At this time, no suspects have been identified, and it appears the victim may have been struck by a stray bullet.”

Further investigation later in the morning led to the recovery of shell casings, and officers are continuing to collect evidence. The case remains under active investigation.

Additional information provided to the Vicksburg Daily News indicates the man was driving through the area when the bullet struck him.

This is a developing story. The Vicksburg Daily News will provide updates as more information becomes available from the Vicksburg Police Department.
