Minor and Knight prepared to lead VHS to greatness

VICKSBURG, Miss. – In less than a month, Vicksburg High School will step onto the football field to kick off the 2024 season. Seniors DeCorey Knight Jr. and Mincer Minor IV are both expected to make significant impacts this season for the Gators.
Minor:
Mincer Minor IV emerged as a defensive threat in the secondary in 2023, excelling at the safety position. With five pass deflections, two interceptions, and allowing only three touchdowns, Minor earned widespread respect and now looks forward to his final season.
“I’m pretty confident about the upcoming season. We have a lot of guys who have been working hard and a bunch of new guys who know what our coaches expect from them,” Minor said.
Minor mentioned the Gators’ goals for the season, which include winning the Red Carpet Bowl, district, north state, and the championship. Since joining VHS, Minor has become one of their key players. He contributed to their postseason appearance last year with a 7-4 record.
“I feel like in previous years we did everything but finish, but we’re changing that this year, and we’ll be great,” he added.
Last season, Minor’s ultimate strength on the field was his ability to cover any wide receiver effectively. His outstanding performance has earned him scholarship offers from Mississippi Delta CC and John Melvin University, and scouts continue to notice his defensive skills, so more offers are expected.
Knight:
DeCorey Knight Jr. has been a significant asset to the Gator football program. Starting as running back since his sophomore year, Knight played a crucial role in VHS reaching North State in 2022 and the postseason in 2023.
In each of his varsity years, Knight has managed to gain over 1,000 all-purpose yards. He was named to the All-District Team both years.
Knight’s accomplishments are impressive, but he’s aiming for even greater success for VHS this year.
“It’s gonna be great, because we put in some serious work and we understand that we’re going to have to continue to fight and compete at a high level as a team,” Knight said.
When Knight gets into the open field, his footwork and athletic ability shine. His hard work has earned him scholarships to schools like Co-Lin, Itawamba, East Central CC, and Southwest Mississippi CC.
Both Knight and Minor play under Christopher Lacey, who is in his second year as Head Coach.
