Speed Street Shootout had Stray Bullets End Up in the Master Bedroom Mattress of Drummond Street Home
VICKSBURG, MS – A shootout on Speed Street around noon on Tuesday had two stray bullets end up in the master bedroom mattress of a home on Drummond.
The homeowner, who we will not name, found the damage a couple of hours after the shootout. According to the homeowner, the two bullets passed through the second-floor wall of the home. One of them struck a dresser in the master bedroom, and that bullet ended up in the mattress. The other bullet terminated in the sub-floor below the bed.
“This is precisely what we’ve all feared,” said a neighborhood resident about the numerous shootings across the community.
Third shooting in two days
The shooting on Speed Street is the third shooting in two days in that immediate area. Sunday night, a home at 1107 Speed was the target of numerous shots from a pistol and shotgun. Three shots rang out in Marcus Bottom near 2510 Halls Ferry less than an hour later. On Tuesday, just before noon, a shootout happened at Speed and Letitia, injuring one.
The neighbors of Drummond and the surrounding area called an emergency meeting with city officials and law enforcement. Crime in Vicksburg has been an ongoing issue for several years with residents.
Mayor George Flaggs, in another meeting on crime, admitted he was wrong the previous 11 years. He acknowledged that we should have paid our officers more money. Before this, Flaggs had contended that law enforcement was a passion and pay was secondary.
Flaggs is up for reelection in 2025 and was elected in 2021 with over 60% of the approximately 4000 votes cast.
One of the suspected shooters in the Speed Street shootout has been named and is wanted by the VPD.
