Season Preview: Stewart entering his seventh season with the Missy Gators
Troy Stewart is embarking on his seventh year as head coach of the Vicksburg High School girls’ basketball team, with the season rapidly approaching.
Although the Missy Gators lost some pivotal players from last year’s team, they remain endowed with a wealth of talent.
“Our strength is going to be our speed as usual but now size is included and my sophomores play tremendous defense and that will definitely standout this year,” Stewart said.
VHS posted a 25-7 record in the 2022-2023 season, securing their fourth consecutive district title. Two of their starters inked collegiate scholarships. They will see the return of standout players like Cynia Johnson, Terri Boyd, Kierra James and Rodrianna Hall.
“They all had great summers and they’re mature to handle the pressure,” Stewart added.
The Missy Gators are in a new district this year but continue to uphold their plans for success in both the district and playoffs.
“Our short term goal is to win district but that’ll be hard for us with those six teams but we’re shooting for it and our main goal will always be to win the gold ball,” Stewart said.
VHS will participate in a scrimmage on Oc. 28 at Lanier High School. The regular season will kick off on Nov. 7 when VHS travels to play Germantown.
