VHS Ninth Grade Team Ended Their Season With a Win Over WC
Vicksburg High School’s ninth-grade football team ended their season with a 28-23 win over Warren Central on Tuesday.
On the opening drive, TJ Selvy hit Corbin Walker for a 60-yard pass that put the Gators inside the 10-yard line. Jaquez Jones ran it in for a touchdown just a couple of plays later and he also scored the 2-point conversion as VHS went up 8-0.
The Gator defense forced a punt on the next drive. Selvy connected with Landon Prentiss on a quick pass just before Jones ran the ball from one side of the field to the next on a 70-yard touchdown run as the Gators went up 14-0. Before the end of the first quarter, Corbin Walker returned a 65-yard punt for a touchdown that put the Gators up 22-0 after Jones’ successful 2-point conversion.
Javid Scott took over the run game for WC in the second quarter. He ran aggressively all the way down the field which set up a touchdown run by Xavier Jackson. Nick Lee threw a successful 2-point conversion to Deshawn Williams to put the score at 22-8.
Lee stepped up and kicked an onside kick which was successfully returned to the nine-yard line by Devin Demby. Quarterback Trystan Fuller hit Landon Burks on a 9-yard touchdown pass while Lee kicked the extra point that put things at 22-15.
As the Gator offense went back onto the field, Selvy hit Messiah Sims on a 40-yard gain but the score remained the same going into halftime.
After halftime, Scott continued to dominate in the running game. Jackson would run in another touchdown and 2-point conversion that gave the Vikings a 23-22 lead.
The Viking defense made a huge play in the fourth quarter when Braylon Jenkins picked off Selvy’s pass as they maintained their 1-point lead. WC continued to drain the clock in the final quarter with the help of Jackson who picked up a 25-yard run.
Jaylen DeFrance caught two nice passes late in the game that put WC on the 11-yard line and in position to score. The Vikings fumbled on the next play where Sims picked it up and ran it for an 89-yard score that gave VHS the 28-23 lead.
WC got back on offense and moved the ball down the field with the help of Jomar Hunt, Fuller, Demby, and Scott. The VHS defense stopped Jackson inside the 5-yard line and that eventually gave the Gators the win.
VHS finished with a 5-1 record under Head Coach Paul Wilson and WC wrapped up their season with a 4-2 record under Head Coach Matt Williams.
