VICKSBURG, MS. – The Vicksburg Military Park will waive admission fees on September 28 in honor of National Public Lands Day. The last free day was June 19 in honor of Juneteenth National Independence Day.

National Public Lands Day is organized annually and led by the National Environmental Education Foundation, in partnership with the National Park Service and other federal agencies. Hundreds of thousands of volunteers roll up their sleeves to help restore and preserve public lands of all types and sizes—from iconic national parks and rivers to local urban green spaces and everything in between. National Public Lands Day is special because it provides all lovers of the environment—old and new—an opportunity to show our appreciation for these unique places.

Established in 1899, the Vicksburg Military Park stands as a poignant testament to the American Civil War’s pivotal Battle of Vicksburg. Located in Vicksburg, Mississippi, the park encompasses over 1,800 acres and features a vast array of monuments, memorials, and historical markers that pay tribute to the soldiers who fought and died during the siege of Vicksburg in 1863. Visitors to the park can explore the meticulously preserved battlefield, including fortified trenches, artillery batteries, and strategic positions, gaining a profound insight into the challenges faced by both Union and Confederate forces.
