Full Enforcement Deadline for Mississippi REAL ID Approaches

JACKSON, Miss. – The deadline for the full enforcement of REAL ID in Mississippi is less than a year away.

REAL ID is a secure form of identification that meets federal security standards for state-issued licenses, driver permits, or ID cards. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security states that Congress passed the REAL ID Act in 2005. This was in response to a recommendation by the 9/11 Commission. The Act sets standards for anti-counterfeiting security measures to ensure accurate identity verification.

The original deadline for full enforcement was May 3, 2023. However, it was extended to May 7, 2025, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Homeland Security officials believe REAL ID will help the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) in its duties. This includes airport security checkpoints and domestic travel.

Since the REAL ID Act’s enactment in 2005, technology has advanced. These advancements have enabled TSA to improve checkpoint screening significantly. Improvements include identity management, on-person screening, property screening, and alarm resolution. TSA also increased its vetting capability through Secure Flight. This is a passenger prescreening program that matches names against trusted traveler lists and watchlists.

Who Needs REAL ID?

Persons 18 or older who want to access federal buildings, board federally regulated commercial flights, or enter nuclear power plants will need a REAL ID. Also, after the enforcement deadline, a REAL ID or passport will be required for these purposes.

The Mississippi Driver’s Service Bureau began issuing REAL ID licenses in 2018. The Bureau, part of the Department of Public Safety, states that REAL IDs are not necessary to drive, vote, conduct banking transactions, apply for federal benefits, or enter hospitals, federal courts, or post offices.

“If you do not have your REAL ID, you may visit any Mississippi driver license station to purchase a duplicate or renewal driver’s license or identification card,” the Bureau stated. For faster service, schedule an online appointment at www.dps.ms.gov.

To obtain a REAL ID in Mississippi, applicants need their social security card, birth certificate, and two forms of proof of residency. Acceptable proofs include utility bills, bank statements, student IDs, and voter registration cards. For a full list of acceptable forms, visit the Mississippi Driver’s Service Bureau website.
