Groundbreaking ceremony held at new jail site this morning
VICKSBURG, MS. – A groundbreaking ceremony was held this morning for the new jail. The property, situated at 1134 Highway 80, once housed the Pinewood Motel, which had been abandoned since 1979. By 2019, the county had demolished the remaining structures and drained a pond located on the premises.
“To say that I’m glad this day has come is understatement,”said Warren County Sheriff, Martin Pace. “I truly believe that at the completion will provide a facility this will not only safer for the staff, safer for the detainees, but safer for this community. This will be a professionally constructed modern facility that will hopefully last generations into the future.”
White Construction is the general contractor and they will began the construction, with an expected completion date of 2026.
In June 2018, the prior board of supervisors purchased a 47-acre tract of land on U.S. Highway 80 for $400,000. Integrated Project Solutions, JBHM Architecture, and White Construction are building the project on this land.
The Voorhis/Robertson Justice Services Group, based in Denver, Colorado, prepared a comprehensive study in 2010 that recommended a facility that would house around 350 inmates. Warren County Sheriff Martin Pace said this would allow space for misdemeanor and pretrial felony prisoners along with state inmates who could participate in community work programs. Due to state statute, inmates in these classifications cannot be housed together in the same area of a correctional facility.
