Vicksburg Native Von Mixon Jr. to be inducted into the UAM Sports Hall of Fame
VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) — Vicksburg native Von Mixon Jr. has been selected for induction into the University of Arkansas at Monticello Sports Hall of Fame, the school announced Monday. He will be honored alongside Braden Chambers, Felicia Crowe, and Scott Howell.
“It’s an honor, and it’s been a little over 20 years since I played there, but being from a small town like Vicksburg makes it even better,” Mixon said.
Mixon made an immediate impact as a wide receiver for UAM in 2004 and 2005, earning All-American honors in his first season. One of his standout performances came against Delta State, where he recorded 10 receptions for 170 yards and two touchdowns.
His 1,245 receiving yards in 2004 remain the school’s single-season record. That same year, he received multiple accolades, including:
- D2football.com Second-Team All-American
- First-Team All-Gulf South Conference
- Daktronics All-South Region
- First-Team Football Gazette All-Region
Before transferring to UAM, Mixon played at Hinds Community College, where he totaled 69 receptions for 750 yards. A 2001 graduate of Vicksburg High School, Mixon led the Gators to a 7–4 record in his senior season.
“To the guys who are playing football now — you have to be dedicated to the game,” Mixon said. “You’re not always motivated to get up early in the morning, but you can always be dedicated. I was 5-foot-7 in high school, but I wouldn’t let anyone outwork me.”
Mixon was inducted into the African American Alumni Hall of Fame in 2024. His UAM induction ceremony is scheduled for Oct. 2.
