Ashtin Wallace Named VDN’s Swimmer of the Year
VICKSBURG, Miss. – Ashtin Wallace has been selected as the Vicksburg Daily News Swimmer of the Year, which makes him the reciprocate of the Afton Wallace Award. Wallace is senior at Warren Central High School where he has led the Vikings to another successful year as the North State Champions.
“My senior year went great because we had an awesome team and a great coach so this was everything we dreamed of,” Wallace said.
Wallace was a dominant force throughout his entire senior year. Back in October, he helped WC to a second conservative North State Title under Head Coach Terry Wong. Just a couple of weeks later, Ashtin became a state champion after finishing in first place in the 200 IM with a time of 2:6.75. He also came in second place in the 100 yard butterfly.
The state meet got even better as Wallace brought home two more gold medals after participating in the 400 freestyle and the 200 yard medley.
“I felt great after winning those gold medals but it also let me know that I was at the end of my high school career so I knew I would have to pick things up more because I want to swim in college,” Wallace added.
Wallace began swimming in elementary school just before junior when his future club team Coach Matthew Mixon spotted him swimming at the Wilkinson-Verbeck YMCA. By the time he reached seventh grade, Wallace found a spot with the Vikings where he created forever memories with his teammates.
“My favorite memory is riding with my friends to every meet and cheering my team on because that’s always exciting,” Wallace said. The only reason why I’m here today is because of the people around me and my parents and coaches have been here every step of the way.”
Wallace was easily selected for this inaugural award as he has shown true leadership throughout his final year at WC.
This award was named after Afton Wallace who was a dedicated swimmer at Warren Central before her death in 2015.
