Special Olympians compete at Halls Ferry Park
VICKSBURG, MS – Special Olympians from across the region gathered at Halls Ferry Park this morning to participate in a variety of competitions. The groups from Central Mississippi began arriving at the park around 8 a.m., ready for a full day of events.
“We had an outstanding day,” said Lucy Young. “About a hundred students participated, ranging from Junior High to adults.” She also noted that Midwest Industries and Multiflex both had representatives at the event.
The competitions included Cornhole, Soccer Skills, Softball, and team sports. Representatives from each event will advance to the 2024 Fall Games, set to take place later this year.
Warren Central High School’s Future Teachers of America, led by director Arlene Smith, were on hand to volunteer. “The success of the Special Olympics depends heavily on the volunteers who help organize the event,” added Young.
This event is a lead-up to the 2024 Fall Games at Camp Shelby near Hattiesburg, scheduled for November 1-3, 2024. The games will feature Team Softball (Traditional and Unified), Croquet, Horse Shoes, Soccer Skills, and Cornhole.
The mission of Mississippi Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, offering opportunities to develop fitness, build courage, and foster joy through athletic achievement and community involvement.
