“More than a test score.” VWSD holds Town Hall Meeting on Thursday

VICKSBURG, Miss. – Dr. Tori Holloway, VWSD superintendent, said “Education is about more than a test score, and our kids should be looked at as more than test scores. It’s about how we prepare for them for after they leave us.”
The remarks were made at the school district’s Town Hall meeting held at the Warren County-Vicksburg Public Library Thursday evening.
Dr. Holloway announced that the graduation rate percentage has increased from 91 percent in 2023 to 92.9 percent in 2024, attributing the increase in graduation efforts to numerous programs the district has employed, including the the ACME (Architecture, Construction, Mechatronics & Engineering) Career Academy which recently was acknowledged in Chicago, Illinois for it’s National Model status.
Dr. Holloway also said that a Logistics pathway is being added to the career pathways curriculum which will allow students to fast-track their CDL (Commercial Driver’s License). As part of this program, the school district has purchased a driving simulator to be used in the course training.
The successes the school district has had with their Work Force Development program was also a topic of the discussion. Dr. Holloway was recently invited to a summit in Ohio, where he was a keynote speaker.
Other programs that Dr. Holloway believes are adding to the successes of the district include the Leader in Me program for elementary level students and the new Portrait of a Graduate for high-school age students.
Dr. Cedric Magee, VWSD Deputy Superintendent, explained that the Portrait of a Graduate program focuses on four key skills that will allow students to be both productive and successful after graduating: Adaptability, Communication, Critical Thinking, and Responsibility.

The program was developed after a series of meetings were held to look at the whether or not students’ educational direction was in time with the modern landscape, and what skills they will need to adapt to these changes.
“We are preparing kids for jobs that don’t even exist yet,” Dr. Magee said.
The school district plans to continue to hold Town Hall meetings on the third Thursday of each month moving forward. The location for next month’s meeting has not yet been announced.
