Tavares Johnson resigns from Mississippi Delta CC, returns to Northside High as head coach
SHELBY, Miss. (VDN) — Tavares Johnson has officially stepped down as the head football coach at Mississippi Delta Community College and will return to the high school ranks, taking over once again as head coach at Northside High School in Shelby, Mississippi.
“I came off of medical leave and was served a six-month contract, and I can’t accept that because, according to my job description, I should have a one-year contract,” Johnson told The Delta News.
Johnson, who previously coached at Northside from 2018 to 2020, will begin his second stint leading the Gators. During his first tenure at Northside, he posted an impressive 21-6 record over three seasons.
Johnson led the Trojans for three seasons, compiling a 6-21 record during his time in Moorhead. Despite the challenges at the junior college level, Johnson has long been regarded as one of Mississippi’s most successful high school coaches.
He holds a 137-64 overall high school coaching record, which includes two state championships with Simmons High School. Johnson has also held coaching roles at Vicksburg High, East Side, and Gentry.
With his return to Northside, Johnson looks to recapture his winning ways and continue building on a strong legacy in Mississippi high school football.
