VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) — Last month, the Vicksburg High School softball team hosted its annual Cancer Strikeout Tournament to raise funds for an individual battling cancer. On Monday night, the Missy Gators presented a check for $2,168 to Nilofur Hawkins, who is currently fighting bone cancer.

Hawkins was unable to attend the pregame ceremony, but her fiancé, Jermaine Wince, accepted the donation on her behalf.

“I would like to thank each and everyone for your extremely generous donation to me and my family,” Wince said. “I am overwhelmed with gratitude for your kindness. Words cannot express how grateful I am for your help. Though simple, it really means a lot. I’m so moved by this gesture. Your thoughtfulness and generosity really mean a lot to not only me, but my family as well. Thanks again for your support and love.”

Wince also threw the ceremonial first pitch before the district matchup, which the Missy Gators won 18-2 over Ridgeland.
