Hattiesburg, Miss.-Vicksburg native Brett Morgan has found success in his first year as West Point High School’s Head Football Coach as the Green Wave won the State Championship last night. WPHS captured a 28-21 win against Gautier High School in Hattiesburg at the University of Southern Mississippi as they found success in running the ball.

“We believe in what we do,” Morgan told The Dispatch. “I think we have good schemes and I think running teams win in the playoffs. If you look at the teams that have won here, they’re running the football.”

The Gators(Gautier) got on the board first when Latrell Pogue scored on an 11-yard run within just a few minutes of the first quarter. With under two minutes left in the first quarter, West Point’s Quintin Thompson scored on a 2-yard run and the game was tied at 7-7 after Jack Taylor’s extra point.

The second quarter was profitable for West Point as they went up 21-7 after Shamane Clark scored two rushing touchdowns from 1 and 9 yards, respectively. Both of Taylor’s extra points were successful.

After halftime, Clark would score another touchdown as the Green Wave went up 28-7 with the help of Taylor’s extra point. The Gators found their way back into the game after quarterback Paul Irving threw a 46-yard touchdown to Kainen Rush. Gautier’s Kasin Thomas also scored on a 6-yard run with 19 seconds left in the game but it wasn’t enough to overcome West Point as they won their 13th state championship.

Clark led West Point with 168 yards and three touchdowns as he finished the year with over 1,500 rushing yards.

“I love that kid,” Morgan said. “He’s just no-nonsense, comes to work, salt-of-the-earth type of player. Couldn’t be happier for that kid.”

Morgan took over as West Point’s Head Coach earlier this year after spending many years as the team’s offensive coordinator. In just one year alone, he has led the Green Wave to a district title, north state championship, and overall state championship.

Morgan is a graduate of Warren Central High School where he played under his father Robert Morgan.
