Vicksburg’s Shardez Taylor signs with Alcorn State football

VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) — Vicksburg native Shardez Taylor has signed a football scholarship with Alcorn State University, officially joining the Braves’ program in Lorman. Taylor confirmed his commitment Monday, marking the next step in a football journey that has taken him through multiple programs and states.
Most recently, Taylor played at East Mississippi Community College under longtime head coach Buddy Stephens. As an offensive lineman, he became a key part of EMCC’s high-powered offense. One of his most notable performances came during the Lions’ 62-14 homecoming victory over Coahoma Community College, where Taylor helped the team pass for 402 yards and rush for 144 yards. He allowed zero sacks in the game.
Prior to EMCC, Taylor spent a season at the University of Southern Mississippi, gaining experience at the Division I level before transferring.
Taylor began his high school career at Vicksburg High School under former head coach Tim Hughes. As a senior, he moved to Texas and transferred to Trinity Christian School in Cedar Hill, where he played alongside now-professional quarterback Shedeur Sanders. During that season, Taylor was instrumental in protecting Sanders, helping the Tigers accumulate nearly 4,000 passing yards en route to a 2020 TCAL National Championship.
At Alcorn State, Taylor will suit up under head coach Cedric Thomas and is expected to bring experience, size and leadership to the offensive line unit.
Shardez Taylor’s journey reflects a commitment to growth, and he now returns to his home state to compete at the next level in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC).
